Ceire Does Us Proud

From Brian McKeown. Trainer Cavan Boxing Club.

While this years World Female championships in China, the only qualifying tournament for female boxers, saw Katie Taylor not only take her 4th World title, qualify for London but also establish herself as the leading female boxer and probably the best the World has ever seen. However another Irish boxer to shine in Qinaughadao City was Cavan's Ceire Smith, a 19 year old from the Cavan Boxing Club, who reached the last 16 in the World and firmly establish her as Ireland's next big boxing star.
Ceire competed very well throughout, defeating opponents from Tzakistan and Jamiaca before going down to the former World and European Champion who went on to take the bronze medal and qualify for the Olympics. The performances of Ceire really alerted Ireland to the fact that there is a strong female boxing organisation here and her quiet, unassuming and modest personality made her one of the most popular competitors in the competition.
This young lady, from the village of Ballyhaise, only took up boxing about four years ago and within 2 years was Ulster and Irish Elite Senior champion and took Provincial and National titles at U,18, U.21 and Intermediate level within 2 years.
It is hard to believe that in 2010 she represented Ireland at the World championships in Barbados at just 17 years of age and after only two Senior bouts, the first of which seen her defeat the Former European bronze medallist, she represented Ireland at the World Championships. It was here, in 2010 that Pat The Baker came on Board to help sponsor Ceire!s competition and training expenes and thankfully have remained on her side since.
This season has seen Ceire go into action no less than thirteen times, coming away the winner no less than eleven times. An even more significant fact is that no less than eleven of the contests took place abroad in China, Canada, U.S.A. Sweden, Poland, Denmark and Austria. In that time she retained her Elite Senior crown, won gold medals at the Angram Centrum Multi Nations in Gotenberg and the Golden Girl International Tournament where she also picked up the best boxer award as well as representing Ireland at both the European and World championship. Defineately a well travelled young lady who just six days after returning from China found herself fighting and winning in Sarnia in Canada.
While Ceire took a year out from College to concentrate on her Olympic dream she had very little income as a non funded athlete and the sponsorship from Pat The Baker was invaluable for day to day living, very much needed and appreciated and both Ceire and Cavan Boxing club are proud to be associated with this local firm with such a high reputation.

Cavan Boxers Punch With Pat

Pat The Baker are delight to be associated with Cavan Amateur Boxing Club. With trainer Brian McKeown straight out of Rocky and seventeen year old Ceire Smith taking on the world, this small club is full of the stuff of dreams.

Letter From Trainer Brian McKeown

Cavan boxing club was formed in 1982 with Charlie Donoghue,Cavan Sports complex manager,Ron Tidy,Cavan Industrial Cleaners, Teddy McCormack, then physio with the Cavan G.A.A. and Brian Mckeown in the original committee. Eddie Madden,a P.T.O. in the Irish army based in Monaghan town as coach.

Business and family committments seen the original committee drift away leaving myself as the only founder member stll involved. I completed my coaching course right up to international level after taking over as coach in 1983.

The club has enjoyed unprecedented success and has produced champions at every level from schoolboy to Senior open class with many going on to represent Ireland in International competition.

Cavan boxers have competed at every major international competition including Olympic Games, 5 World championships, 4 European championships, 4 E.U. championships, European youth and schoolboy championships, World junior U.19 championships and gold medal winning performances at numerious Multi Nations Tournments.

Our first champions were Martin McDonagh and Johnny Mitchell in 84 and we have had champions et National level every year since.

Some of our outstanding boxers have included Andy Murray current E.U.champion and dual Irish title holder as a professional, John Joe Nevin,World bronze medalist and Bejing Olympian, Johnny Mitchell and David Conlon,World Police and Firefighters champions, Caroline Reilly and Joe Nevin, Ringside World club champions, Pat Cosgrove, first ever Irish senior champion from Cavan as well as Michelle Brady, Yvonne Courtney, Aoibhean Bartley, female intermediate champions and David Nevin, Ulster and 4 nations champion and Irish Senior finalist.

The latest success story is that of 17 year old Ceire Smith from Ballyhaise currently representing Ireland at the World Senior championships in Barbados.Ceire is a leaving cert pupil at Breffni College and earned her surprise callup to the Irish Elite team with a surprise win over Irelands top flyweight Debbie Rodgers in the box off. One of the youngest boxers ever to represent Ireland at senior World level Ceire travels more in hope than expectation but will certainly return a much better fighter and a realistic hope for the 2012 Olympics in London.

Ceire has enjoyed a terrific 12 months which has seen her win Ulster and Irish titles at U.18,U.21,Intermediate and Senior level,Reach the final of the Ringside World championships in the U.S.A. before achieving her dream of representing Ireland at the premiier world event for female boxers. She will be areal medal prospect for the future and will certianly benefit from her international competition and participation with the High Performance Unit over the next few years.

Cavan boxing club are proud to be involved with Pat the Baker and we are very much appreciative of their support and sponsorship over the coming year.

A group of fourth year PR students from Dundalk Institute of Technology have teamed up with Pat the Baker to produce online videos to highlight Pat the Baker’s new ‘Scone In’ campaign.

A ‘Scone In’ involves getting a group of friends or loved one’s together and enjoying some quality time with each other while eating scones. These comical, low budget videos were filmed and produced by the four students as part of their final year project.

Win Meet And Greet With Top Comedians Thanks To Pat The Baker Craic Brack and iRadio

iRadio, which runs regional radio stations i102-104 and i105-107 in the West/Northwest and North East respectively, has teamed up with Ireland’s famous bread company Pat The Baker to launch a Hallowe’en barm brack with a difference-the Pat the Baker Craic Brack!

Ireland’s champion baker has not only included a ‘bundle of laughs’ in each brack but is offering customers the chance to win four VIP tickets to the Hallowe’en Howls Comedy Festival in Portlaoise this October Bank Holiday Weekend. The prize in association with i102-104 and i105-107 will include a meet and greet with performers at the festival like PJ Gallagher, Neil Delamere and i105-107’s breakfast show co-host Bernard O Shea.

If all that isn’t enough, there is the chance to win €20 in each Craic Brack, which are on sale in retail shops across Ireland for the month of October and have been handmade. Pat the Baker Brand Manager Oliver Durkin explains that the champion baker decided to launch the special brack after the success of the Barack Brack which went on sale for President Barack Obama’s inauguration with a ‘special presidential mix’. “Pat the Baker bracks are extremely successful and are absolutely delicious. They are made by hand in our factory in Granard, Co Longford and we decided to launch the Craic Brack after the success of the Barack Brack-plus it’s all a bit of craic!”

Oliver explains that this is another partnership between the champion baker and the highly successful regional radio stations i102-104 and i105-107. “We’re an ongoing partner with iRadio sponsoring the I Go Home show on i102-104 and Breakfast with Bernard and Keith on i105-107. As sponsors of that show and with the lads performing at the Hallowe’en Howls Festival, it made sense for us to extend that partnership into comedy!” Pat the Baker and iRadio are both known for their innovative campaigns and each Craic Brack will carry the iRadio logo. Pat the Baker Bracks, explains Oliver Durkin, are one of the company’s best sellers but this brack is different. “All our bakers have been told to put some special laughter into this brack so when they are baking they are smiling constantly! The bundle of laughs included in each Craic Brack is the result of that!”

As a result of using the top flours and ingredients available, Pat the Baker is recognized as baking the best bread for the past fourteen years by the Master Bakers of Ireland. Rena Maycock, General Manager of iRadio says the stations are delighted to be involved with Pat the Baker on yet another major marketing promotion. “Pat the Baker are known for their fun and exciting campaigns and this ties in well with our ethos in both i102-104 and i105-107, where fun but gripping radio is the order of the day. We are delighted to team up with the champion baker yet again.”

iRadio is the exclusive media partner of the second Annual Carlsberg The Hallowe’en Howls Comedy Festival taking place in Portlaoise from Thursday 22 October –Monday 26 October. The festival is a must for the festival goer’s calendar with intimate comedy venues and the lineup boasting the crème de la crème of Irish Comedy including Jason Byrne, Karl Spain and Maeve Higgins. Top Irish Comedians who fill Vicar Street on a regular basis will grace some venues that can accommodate just 60 patrons.

iRadio, has made its’ name thanks to its’ talented on air personalities and major station promotions such as The Naked Bus, the i102-104 Thief and Indecent Proposal. i102-104, set up in February 2008, is now the biggest 15-34 regional station outside of Dublin with a weekly reach over the past six months of 166,000, according to the most recent listenership figures.
